As the 8th grade (semester one) art class comes to a close, students worked to create these stunning pinch pot creations. Students used clay to create these pieces and learned the various techniques/processes that comes with using clay. Students also learned the proper pronunciation of "kiln" which is the clay "oven" which bakes the clay to dry it out at a shocking 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit!! The first firing process is called "bisque" which dries the clay and prepares it for the glaze. The glazes are liquid "paints" that are actually chemicals that melt together in the kiln to create a glass. Students learned about the chemical reactions that happen when the various chemicals come together at high temperatures in the glazing process to create the beautiful colors you see here on their projects.
